RESTORATIVE DENTISTRY is the restoration
of decayed or broken teeth, or replacement of missing teeth. We
can restore your teeth in a variety of ways , filling them
with standard fillings or specialist inlays, or crowning them
if tooth damage is more extensive. We can replace missing teeth
with bridgework, or with implants.
AVAILABLE FILLINGS
Amalgam
For years dentists have filled teeth with amalgam filling,
made from a mercury alloy. It has little cosmetic appeal and
there are increasing concerns about the possible side effects
of mercury, so we now prefer to use alternative dental fillings.
Composite
Composite, or white fillings look far better and are available
in different shades to match your natural tooth colour. The
composite is bonded to the tooth undergoing treatment, which
is carefully isolated to reduce the chance of further tooth
fracture, and to provide a good seal against bacteria. We
recommend composite fillings for small to medium sized cavities.
Inlays
Inlays are made in a laboratory from composite, or porcelain,
or gold. Particularly suitable for larger cavities, dentists
believe theyíre the best restorative filling available, because
theyíre made to measure , restoring the tooth to its original
contours.
Crowns
We use crowns when there's not enough tooth left to use inlays.
Crowns cover the entire tooth, so we trim the tooth specially
to fit the crown over it. Crowns are available in gold, or
metal bonded to porcelain (ideal for back teeth), or plain
porcelain , the best option for front teeth where the metal
bonding might show.
