Preventative dentistry

We can't emphasise enough the importance of visiting the hygienist regularly. Our caring hygienists can help prevent gum disease and tooth decay, the two major causes of tooth loss.

What is gum disease (periodontal disease)?

We regularly hear, 'I see a little blood when I brush; is this okay?'

The answer is simple: healthy gums are an essential part of the support structures that keep your teeth in place. When healthy, your gums are firm, should not bleed and fit snuggly around your teeth.

If you are suffering from gum disease, your gums are responding to bacteria in dental plaque along the gum line and between the teeth. Effective daily plaque removal reverses the early stages of gum disease, also called gingivitis. Many people will notice its signs of red, swollen and bleeding gums, along with bad breath (halitosis).

If left untreated it can progress to the more severe and irreversible form of gum disease, periodontitis, where the inflammation reaches the bone. As more bone is destroyed by the disease, the gums begin to recede, the roots of the teeth become exposed, resulting in the teeth becoming looser and abscesses may even occur. Ultimately, it may result in the loss of the teeth.

What can I do to prevent gum disease?
Our dentists and dental hygienists can help by teaching you how to prevent the build-up of dental plaque and tartar, and remove any accumulation with professional cleaning.

What is tooth decay?
Noticing an unusual sensitivity to eating hot or cold food in a tooth is often the first sign of tooth decay, or a leaking filling. Tooth decay can be reduced by regularly tooth brushing with a toothpaste containing fluoride, which serves to prevent cavities.

How can I prevent tooth decay?
Our dentists and hygienists can also help by modifying your existing methods of tooth brushing, and recommending and applying fluoride products to prevent or sometimes even treat early tooth decay, helping prevent the need for fillings.
